The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other Group A and Group B central services. It is widely regarded as one of the toughest competitive examinations in the world.
The Prelims is an objective-type screening test. Only Paper I marks are used for cut-off; Paper II (CSAT) is qualifying with a 33% threshold.
The Mains examination is descriptive and tests in-depth knowledge. It has 9 papers – 2 qualifying language papers and 7 merit-ranking papers (Essay + 4 GS + 2 Optional).
The interview assesses the candidate's suitability for a career in public service, testing qualities like mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, intellectual depth, and social cohesion.
